Chief Assessment Officer

Stephen Murphy joined Measured Progress in April 2017 as Vice President, Measurement Services. In this capacity he led the groups responsible for assessment design and development, including psychometrics and research, content development, publishing, and project management.

With the merger of Measured Progress with AdvancED in July 2018, Dr. Murphy assumed the role of Chief Assessment Officer. In this role he oversees the Measurement Services, Client Services, and Assessment Services teams. These groups perform all aspects of assessment and research design, development, delivery, scoring, analysis, and reporting.

The Measurement Services group designs and crafts research plans, assessment designs, and assessment content that support clients’ goals. Client Services applies PMP and PMI principles for client management and relationship building and for the execution of assessment business. Assessment Services, the operations and scoring group, manages distribution, scanning, and hand scoring in support of the delivery of assessment programs.

Dr. Murphy’s involvement in educational assessment spans both operations and research. Beginning his career in research and psychometrics, Dr. Murphy went on to assume leadership roles in K–12 assessment at major educational publishing companies. His experience includes leading teams of researchers, psychometricians, and data analysts, as well as overseeing the development of products and solutions for national, state, and district assessment programs. He is a frequent journal contributor and presenter at national conferences for educational measurement and for industrial and organizational psychology.

Dr. Murphy holds a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Oklahoma. He also earned a master’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University, and BS and BA degrees from Cumberland University.
