Surveys of Enacted Curriculum

The Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (SEC) provide K-12 teachers of mathematics, science, and English language arts with consistent data on current instructional practices and content being taught in classrooms. Originally a paper survey, the assessment is now available online. Upon survey completion, the group data is reported in charts and graphs to facilitate analysis. The SEC’s comprehensive data analysis and reporting tools help teachers, administrators, and policymakers to:

  • align classroom instruction with state standards and assessments.
  • plan and evaluate initiatives, such as professional development and Reading First, to change instructional content and/or practice
  • analyze instructional practices and teacher preparation to develop a needs assessment in low performance areas.
  • measure indicators of instruction and their relationship to student achievement.

State curriculum specialists, teachers, and researchers developed the SEC and reporting tools over the past decade. The Surveys have been field tested in hundreds of schools and classrooms through collaboration with state education agencies and are currently used in 18 states and numerous schools and districts across the U.S.

Professional Development

CCSSO partners with a number of organizations and independent consultants to create a Professional Development Team that provides training and technical assistance to support SEC projects. Members of the team help states plan and facilitate SEC workshops. Technical support includes planning an SEC project, analyzing the data, marketing the project, writing evaluation reports, communicating with stakeholders, and any other topic identified by an SEC project team.
