Assessment Literacy

Assessment literacy is the understanding and application of sound assessment practices. This requires knowledge of the various forms of assessment including:
  • national and state standardized tests,
  • district benchmark or interim tests,
  • classroom summative assessments, and
  • formative classroom assessments that inform instruction during instruction.

Differentiating between these assessments means understanding what each can (or can’t) tell you about student learning—the essence of assessment literacy. This information enables you to build construct a balanced assessment system that yields a clear picture of student learning and facilitates improved instruction.
