Professional Learning Teams – Classroom Assessment for Learning

This program helps educators evaluate existing assessment practices and build a comprehensive and balanced accountability system. Communities of practice emerge as teachers implement various classroom assessment strategies, analyze results, and discuss implications. Through this learning team model, we articulate the connection between high-quality, student-involved classroom assessments and how best to use this connection to improve student learning. In addition, participants explore how to establish and facilitate learning teams as a vehicle for further professional growth. We focus on guiding educators to

  • improve teaching and learning by balancing standardized assessments of learning with formative classroom assessments for learning;
  • understand and articulate the keys to sound classroom assessment and the relationship between assessment and student motivation and learning;
  • increase understanding of the relationship among assessment, student motivation, and effective schools;
  • identify specific strategies to involve students in the ongoing assessment of their own learning; and
  • organize, facilitate, and maintain learning teams for assessment literacy using Educational Testing Service/Assessment Training Institute materials.
