Reading Content Strands
Comprehension and Analysis
The items accompanying the reading passages require students to demonstrate their skills in both literal understanding and critical analysis of literary and informational texts. For example, students demonstrate an understanding of main idea, cause-and-effect relationships, story elements, persuasion and bias, literary devices, and the author’s purpose and perspective.
Reading Process and Language Skills
Students use context clues, word analysis, knowledge of word origins, and word relationships to determine the meaning of words in literary and informational texts. Some items require students to use reading strategies and skills to answer items. For example, students apply research skills to access, understand, and synthesize information from a variety of sources (e.g., print, electronic, interviews). Students apply understanding of organizational patterns, arguments, and techniques.
